bug in portfolio manager? or is it me?

Postby monso » Wed May 19, 2010 3:27 pm

In portfolio Manager:
I enter security price: "4,14"
Either press enter, tab, or move cursor to another cell; then:
MyMoney converts "4,14" to "4.14" making total amount multiplied by 1000
So 100 shares at 4.14 is 4.140,00€
What can I do?
I'll buy Mymoney if I can track my investments reliably.

Hello,

What are your language settings? We will double check that we are doing proper conversion between locales (in the US "4,14" means "4 thousand 140 dollars" or 4140.00)

Thanks,

HI and thanks for your reply.

I use the "English (US)" interface (translated application file) because I do not like how the spanish version is translated. But my language settings for "language and country" when I first entered the transaction where "Spain (Catalan)". Either way, I've changed the language settings to French -which is similar to Catalan-, and also to "English (US)" and it does not work at all. I've also set all language settings to US English so that there wasn't an issue with mixing languages. But it doesn't work. Moreover, if I enter "4.4" as price, MyMoney converts it to "44.0" no matter which language setting I use. The funny thing is that the fields "number of shares" and "comission" work as expected: I enter "4,0" and MyMoney keeps "4,0". I'm using MyMoney on a MacBook Pro and I've tried it also on my Imac. No way.

Thanks
monso

Hello,

We will double check number conversion in your language settings.

Could you please give us an idea why don't you like Spanish translation? Is it plain wrong or it is more of a taste issue?

Thanks,

First: thanks for your fast response. It's amazing.

About the spanish translation: I guess it was someone from Mexico who translated it, which is excellent, but I don't feel the application talking to me when I read "manejador del portafolio" because in Spain we say "gestor de cartera" either in Spanish or in Catalan. We never say "correr este reporte". Yes: that's plain wrong. We say "generar informe". And worst of it all, "securities" is translated lazily as "seguridades", which does not mean anything in this context!
That's why I prefer the English version: I understand more naturally: "portfolio manager" than "manejador de cartera"!

As a philologist I'm somehow touchy on language issues -my apologies.

We will contact our translator, he is actually from Venezuela, not Mexico --- but he will certainly benefit from your suggestions.

Thank you very much for bringing this up,

Thank you so much for your fix and your quick answers.
If you wish to have a more standard international Spanish version of your software -not with strict venezuelan flavor-,please tell your Spanish translator to:

1. Translate "seguridades" to either "acciones" or "activos" (which are "stocks" or "assets", the latter including stocks, bonds and derivatives). "Seguridades" may have something to do with finance in Venezuela, but I think this was a lazy straight translation as it literally translates to "safeties" in English, yep.
2. Correct where it appears "órden" to "orden" without accentuating the "o". That's a basic spelling mistake not tolerable in any serious software.
3. Substitute "manejador" for "gestor" whenever that translates "manager".
4. Substitute "portafolio" for "cartera" which is the standard financial denomination of "portfolio" in all the textbooks I own.
5 In "Reconciliar ésta cuenta", the "e" in the word "esta" is never accentuated according to the most basic spelling and grammar rules.
6. In "Ultima reconciliada", the "U" of "ultima" has to be accentuated. That one really hurts my eyes!
7. "run calculator" cannot be translated to "correr calculadora" but to "iniciar calculadora" or simply "calculadora".
8. Very important: the accounting terminology for "deposit" and "withdrawal" in Spanish is "abono" and "cargo", if one uses nouns, or the verbs "abonar" and "cargar". That translation would be pristine, but if you prefer plainer language "withdrawal" cannot be tranaslated to "retiro" which means "retirement"! It has to be translated to "retirada".

That's my tiny contribution to your great software. If you wish your software in Catalan, just tell me!

Sure, we would appreciate help. The pool of qualified Catalan translators is not that large, we checked craigslist actually.

We are releasing 2.0.56 these few days, we will contact you once the release is out. We normally offer a full lifetime license to folks who help us, your name in the credits, and our undying gratitude !

Thanks,

Thank you so much. I'll be honored if you select me to do the translation to Catalan. Count on me.

Thanks.
