Budget option without investments?

Postby essambk » Wed Jan 06, 2010 12:25 pm

I recently made the switch to the Mac and have been shopping around for a replacement for Quicken, since apparently Intuit has decided that Mac users are idiots. Someone online recommended My Money and I decided to try it out. I really like it so far, like the fact that it is open source and multi-platform but am dismayed by the lack of basic budgeting. Based on a comment in the forums (in French), it sounds like Budgeting and Investing is planned for the second half of 2010 (but then my French language skills are poor).

To be honest, I really couldn't care less about Investing (since I'm not doing any yet), but desperately need at least basic Budgeting functionality. Since Investing is probably WAY more complicated than Budgets, would it be too far out of line to request that basic Budgeting be added sooner rather than waiting for all the Investing stuff to be added? If not, I'm afraid I'll have to keep looking or keep using Windows Quicken (yuck) in a VM.

Hello,

We are very focused on Investments functionality at this point. Budgeting is approved for 2010, it is in a design phase and we plan on having a first release, most likely a beta version, in the second half of 2010.

Having said so, My Money does offer some rudimentary budgeting today: you always can assign Categories and Sub-Categories to your transactions and Quick Analytics allows you query against these categories to see how your category spending over time. If you assign goals, for example not to exceed $1000/month on groceries, you can check against it in reports and visualizations. This is obviously not a full fledged budgeting with reminders, alerts, goals and progress tracking, but it could work for relatively simple scenarios while software support comes along

Thanks,

It's already first half of 2011. Any news about budgeting?
