Customizing Report

Postby newuser » Sat Oct 10, 2009 11:31 am

Is there a way to customize a report such that I can view monthly expenses at the category level (i.e. without the individual transactions).

Example:
Jan Feb Mar .... Total
Income:
Wages 100 100 100 300

Expenses
Taxes 25 25 25 75

Total: 75 75 75 225

Also, in the report if you have 2 expenses for the same amount to the same payee it only picks up one of them. Is this a known bug?
Finally, have you released the investment module for the MAC? If not, when is this planned to be released?
I am switching over from MS Money and this program looks the most promising, but it needs more flexible reporting in order to be really useful.

Thanks, Sumit

Hello,

1) Have you tried the P&L reports, they do what you want to do in terms of summarizing the expenses and skipping the transactions

2) Investments module is in beta, we are distributing it to select users to test out before we enter into public beta program

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply. The P&L is close to what I want but I can't figure out how to get a monthly breakout except to manually generate each month's report and save it. If you do a report for a longer time period, say quarterly, it adds everything up instead of breaking out by month. Also, is there a way to get categories, and sub-categories but not transactions? Thanks, Sumit

We could add monthly P&L, this is a small change.

We also have a comparison P&L planned, i.e. how the current numbers look compared to last month, last quarter, last year. It is similar to what you are trying to do, get breakdowns by month in a quarter.
This functionality scheduled for 2.0.49 timeframe

This looks excellent software and my most likely purchase to replace MS Money. I have tested Moneydance (very good) and iBank (pretty good) but if I can get past 2 thinks with MyMoney then I'll be using this for next few years I think, the developers have certainly made a great product so far. Okay, point 1 is that I need the investment module asap and hopefully it allows UK fund price updates rather than just share prices as is the case with iBank. Point 2 is I need some clearer reports, for example - net worth over time as a report rather than a chart. I also find the current reports difficult to understand, for example one account balance over all dates shows the a/c as -£250 yet it is a monthly saver a/c that has always been in credit. A report on all accounts, all categories and all payees is reporting my balance as around an eighth of its actual value so I am nt sure what is happening there but either the report is wrong or it is not explained clearly enough for me.

So far I am 90% towards purchasing this to replace MS Money, hope to get over the final 10% this week as I investigate these reports a little more.
Thanks for a great program and good luck with the investments module, I really need that!

- Category
- Under Category
- Amount in Under Category
- Total for Category

Any idea how i can really set up such a report outcome? Would be glad, thx and rgs, Mgas58

Hello,

It is not possible to customize MyMoney reports similar to Microsoft Money; one can customize the content (or what is shown) such as accounts, payees, dates, etc.

The structure of the reports (or how the content is shown) is not customizable at this point

Hi MThadm, thx for your fast answer which brings myself into a uncomfortable situation, but there is a way to sort the category, with export to a CSV file and import into excel...not really highend fashion but it works. thx and rgs, mgas58

I'm evaluating MyMoney for purchase. As I understand it, you should be able to make pretty much whatever report you want from iReport (which I have used before). Perhaps My Money could store queries for common reports (or supersets, as it is easier to delete or aggregate than the other way around). Wouldn't that handle the original poster's request?

Hello,

1) MyMoney uses Jasper reports as its reporting engine, all reports are designed with iReport; if you know your way around iReport it is actually quite easy to design new (or customize existing) reports

2) We don't assume that the customer knows how to use the iReport, hence the original answer. Our wiki has extensive information on how to design reports and we don't mind helping with the queries, etc if that's the route you want to take.
