Backup question

Postby freakyfoodcdn » Sat Mar 21, 2009 9:32 am

I remembered my other question. I'm currently having issues with backing up my database. I'm on XP (if that matters) and when I try to backup my database, it never completes. I've let it run for 30+ minutes and it builds a huge file, the biggest one at over 12 gigs before I cancelled it and it was still going. I don't have the space for a backup that large and it seems like that's way too large for the program. Could someone help me troubleshoot what my problem might be? Also, when I run a backup, it causes MyMoney to hang and I have to force a quit even after I've cancelled the backup.

I'm worried that if my data gets lost or damaged somehow, I won't have a backup because of this problem and I don't want to put lots of time into maintaining my accounts (and I've already spent the money) if I'll be unable to back them up.

Thanks.

Please upgrade to the latest version so we are on the same page before troubleshooting this, you can get it from http://www.mthbuilt.com/download.html

After upgrade, please switch off automatic backups from My Money through options and make sure that you backup location is pointing to a valid folder

From My Money please run manual backup, File-Data Maintenance-Backup, does it still try to backup your entire hard disk?

Thanks

I upgraded early this morning and tried to run a backup prior, which is what reminded me of this problem. I had already turned off automatic backups prior to this and it is pointing to a valid folder.

After posting this, I ran a manual backup just as you described, and it took about 25 minutes but actually completed. The backup zip size is 5.61G. If I try to view it in WinRar I get an error:

D:\***\****2009-03-21.zip: Unexpected end of archive

I realize I probably can't open it with WinRar, but I was trying to see what's causing the 5+G of size.

Is this right? 5 gigs seems to be a lot. If it's right, it's right, but it does seem to be a lot for a backup file.

Thanks!

No this is not right at all. Please keep the automatic backups switched off, most likely there is an issue and a wrong folder is being backupd up.

Could you please tell us:

1) Where is My Money installed, i.e C:\Program Files\....

2) Where is you data file:

3) Where is the backup folder:

Thanks

Okay, I've left automatic backups turned off.

It is installed at: C:\Program Files\MTH\My Money

I'm not sure exactly which is the data file itself, but the database opens (when I open the program) from: D:\Financial Stuff\moneyDB

Backup Folder is S:\temp

Please create a new folder inside of Financial Stuff, call it MyMoney for example.

Please copy moneyDB in there. Please rename the old moneyDB into something else, for example moneyD1.

Next time you start the program please use File-Open File and point to Financial Stuff, point to MyMoney, and open it

At this point your backups should work, please run a manual backup to double check

Thanks

Oh! Perfect, it worked! It's now around 338kb and took about 50 or 60 seconds max to backup!

Thanks so much!

Can I turn back on automatic backups now with no problem?

Yes, we advise on having automated backup switched on at all times
