can not import from MS office

I have just recently switched over to apple macbook from Windows. I was using MS money for my transactions. I am keen on your program for the mac and have installed the latest version. I have followed your instructions on how to import CSV files from MS money. The converting process went well and I can read the csv file on excel but mymoney does not import it. It goes to import complete without importing. Hopefully this can be resolved, otherwise there will be no point for me to purchase your license.

Please open your CSV file in excel again:

it should look like the following:

Code: Select all
Num,Date,Payee,C,Account,Memo,Category,Amount

,9/19/06,INTEREST PAYMENT,E,Citibank Online Interest Checking,INTEREST,Income/Interest,0.4

You should not have other columns such as running totals and monthly balances. If you do have monthly balances please regenerate the file, please follow instructions to the line.

If you sill have issues after regenerating the file, please send us few lines of your CSV, simply copy/paste first few lines into email we will take a look.

Thanks

We are looking into this.

The problem with your file is that there are no commas. CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values, and we use the commas to understand where one field finishes and the other starts.

If you load CSV file into Excel or Numbers the values should be re-arranged into columns, in your case everything goes into this one large column and we can't make sense of what is what

There must be a setting somewhere during the file generation that specifies that the file should be comma separated, normally MS Money will save things into proper CSV when asked to, in your case this doesn't happen for some reason, can you experiment a bit on MS Money side to see why you aren't getting proper exports?

Couple of issues/comments:

1) You have a classification column which we don't need. We loaded your file into excel, selected classification and deleted it.
The we saved it back into csv file

this is what the file should look like:

Code: Select all
Num,Date,Payee,C,Account,Memo,Category,Amount
,1/1/93,Opening Balance,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,,-4.64
,1/1/93,Compuserve,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,Computing : Compuserve,-5.26
,1/1/93,British Rail,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,Heathrow Airport,Travel : Trains,-59.5
,1/5/93,Barclaycard Visa,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,,69.4
,1/7/93,Compuserve,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,Computing : Compuserve,-4.85
,1/7/93,Maplins Electronics,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,Electromics : Maplins,-31.05

Please either regenerate the file again or clear it in Excel/Numbers

2) Default date in import is MM/dd/yy (Month/Day/Year). Please take a look at your CSV file, if it is anything not like it you need to change the date format in Import/Export preferences, for example if you have 1993-01-01 you may need to enter yyyy-MM-dd. But please check the csv first because Excel may change it
itself.

3) After import your accounts will not appear automatically in the chart of accounts next to register, by default only favorites are shown there. Please switch into Account Manager Tab and mark accounts as favorites.

4) You will likely lose some of the reconciliation information and most likely have to bring accounts to what they should be manually. We have brought Microsoft Money information from 1994 I think the earliest, so yours is the oldest one we have ever seen. Such a long history will clearly require some manual intervention, please be prepared for that.

Also, importing from Microsoft is very CPU intensive, please allow some time, 10k transactions takes on average 15 minutes on an older macbook, yours may be faster obviously depending how fast the box is.

Thanks

I have completed your instructions and have deleted the category. I have also changed the date format to US MM/DD/YYYY as you suggested. The result is still the same, it goes to import completed without importing the CSV,

Num,Date,Payee,Account,Memo,Category,Amount
,01/01/1993,Opening Balance,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,,-4.64
,01/01/1993,Compuserve,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,Computing : Compuserve,-5.26
,01/01/1993,British Rail,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,Heathrow Airport,Travel : Trains,-59.5

Missing reconciliation status

you have:

Num,Date,Payee,Account,Memo,Category,Amount
,01/01/1993,Opening Balance,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,,-4.64

There should be a 'C' field after payee, this indicates if transaction has been cleared/reconciled, etc

Num,Date,Payee,C,Account,Memo,Category,Amount
,0/01/93,Opening Balance,R,B/card Plat Visa 4929282133301 D,,,-4.64

We need exactly 8 fields, they can be empty, thats ok, but the count should be 8.

Thanks
