Does MyMoney run on Windows 98?

Postby nickbull » Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:39 pm

Does MyMoney run on Windows 98? I downloaded it and tried to run it on my Win98 system and got an error message. Can't find anything on the MTHBuilt web page about supported operating systems, except for "My Money is a true cross-platform application, we support all major operating systems today and plan on continuing to do so in the future." I'm willing to accept that Win98 no longer counts as a "major operating system" :-)

The biggest motivation for switching away from Quicken is that Quicken no longer supports Win98. So if MyMoney doesn't support Win98 then maybe I'll have to switch to MoneyDance instead.

Thanks,

Nick

We don't have Windows 98 in the lab and we don't test against it.

We could install it and see whether My Money runs on it or not, but I don't believe we will be able to provide a regular support for anything older than Windows 2000

OK, thanks. I was assuming that since it is Java-based that it would run on Win98 just like MoneyDance does.

We do have custom code in addition to Java code base that takes advantage of different platforms that we run on, we provide much better integration with Cocoa for example and we do memory and thread management on Windows, so we are not 100% pure Java application.

Few points:

Microsoft stopped support for Windows 98 two and a half years ago (July 2006)

Sun has announced that they will be dropping Java 1.5 support in October of 2009 , see http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp

The newer versions of Java (6.0 and higher) are not supported on Windows 98

You may want to consider gradually upgrading out of Windows 98 since the major vendors are discontinuing it
