How to change transaction?

I've followed the Wiki and My Money now has all my historic data from Ms Money UK Edition. However, this was only up until the middle of December so I've exported my statement as QIF and imported into My Money.

Now for my problem. Some of the transaction have come in as expenses when they should be transfers. How do I go about changing the transaction?

I thought it would be as simple as Quick Edit change to transfer and updating the category. However, this just seems to leave it as an expense. What am I doing and what do I need to do?

Both Quicken and MS Money are actually quite good at marking up their transfers. You typically have a mismatch transfer/expense when you export from banks because they don't really know or care to properly identify the receiving end of the transaction.

If the problem is caused by import originated from either Quicken/MS Money we would like to see the qif file, it could be as simple as adjusting some transfer settings in the import/export dialog.

If the problem is after importing bank originated qif file then most likely you will need to go and fix the transfer transactions one by one. We plan on having refactoring for these situations but it is in early test stages at the moment.

Thanks

The above is the scenario I am experiencing but I can't work-out how to "fix" the transactions? Can you explain how to convert an expense transcation to a transfer transaction or is it a case of delete the imported expense and create a new transfer transaction?

Cheers

1) Select the transaction in question

2) Select "Category" - Special Categories/Transfer

3) Select SubCategory - Account to where the transfer is going or coming from

4) Enter

Okay maybe I am missing something. I have followed your instructions and the transaction has been changed to a Transfer category and is showing up in the other account.

However, I was expecting in the main account for the transaction in the UI to change from a Withdrawal type to a Transfer type? It hasn't done this it is still a listed as a Withdrawal type transaction although the category has it as a transfer.

Does that make sense or should I take a screenshot to make it easier to visualise?

This is as designed. My Money has 2 transfer types, a simple transfer where, for example, you take $100 and move it from saving into checking. The second type is called Split Transfer and is used mostly for business accounting, for example when you purchase $100 worth of goods you may want to split the amount and transfer $95 to vendor account and $5 to sales tax obligation.

In your case to speed up expense to transfer conversion it is easier to just convert your expense transaction into split transfer, otherwise you would have to delete the transaction and re-enter it again. Split transfers are very similar to functionality to regular transfers (plus it is much more flexible) the only potential drawback being that it is displayed differently.

Ok, I guess going forward it doesn't really matter. It was just for consistency as the import from MS Money was very good by My Money.

Other option I guess would be to bring MS Money upto date and then do an export into a new My Money database and then I only have to worry about new transactions
