New User Qs - (1) File extension? (2) "Dual Categorization"?

Postby rlindau » Wed Dec 24, 2008 3:53 pm

I'm a new MyMoney user, on the 60-day trial.

I've been using Quicken for years. I recently switched from Windows to Kubuntu 8.10, am seeking a finance package that runs on Linux better than Quicken does (it runs under CrossOver Office but has speed / perpetual repainting problems).

Some initial questions...

1. Is there a recommended filetype I should use for my MyMoney files? (Not seeing a default, I just used ".mymoney")

2. More significant: I'm highly dependent on Quicken's ability (I think MS Money has something similar) to classify transactions two ways, independent of each other. In Quicken I did this by assigning to each transaction (or split transaction) a category representing the type of income or expense (e.g., "Concert Income / Admissions") and a class representing an event (e.g., "Concert 1"). I could then do reports by category, class, or category vs class. My question: Is there a ways to do something analogous in MyMoney? I certainly don't see a way to record two categories / classifications for a single transaction?

Thanks, Rob L

Hello,

1.
My Money keeps its data in a database, not a single file. When you create a new database My Money will create a folder with the name that you specified and it will arrange the data inside of that folder. You certainly can give it an extension, but it is not necessary

2.
There are no classes/classifications outside of Categories. We have received a number of requests/suggestions/pleas on why these are important; at this point we have accepted this as a feature that will be implemented and have started the planning process.

Thanks

OK, thanks very much for the quick reply.

Re filetype, D'oh - I didn't realize I was creating a folder when I did a "save as...."

Re dual categorization - I'll keep an eye on upcoming MyMoney releases, then. FWIW, I need ability not just to capture an additional classification for each transaction, but also to report, e.g. rows = expense categories ("hall rental," "conductor's fee," uncategorized, total, etc.) vs cols = additional classification ("October Concert," "February Concert," unclassified, total, etc.).

Thanks, Rob L
